| Fire protection - a must for tunnel construction The construction work on the Weser Tunnel between Dedesdorf and Kleinensiel near Bremen is now nearing completion - lining the two tunnel tubes with fireproof cladding is one of the final important tasks to be performed. Weser Tunnel connects the regions Weser-Ems and Elbe-Weser The Lower Weser separates two large regions of Lower Saxony, i.e. Weser-Ems and Elbe-Weser. Six ferries currently provide a time-intensive and costly connection between these regions. The nearest bridge is in Bremen. This "natural" separation of the two economic and socio-political regions will no longer exist following the opening of the Weser Tunnel at the end of the year. Two 1.6 kilometer tunnel tubes pass under the Weser near the towns of Dedesdorf and Kleinensiel and are designed to create a connection between the B 212 access road and the A 27 motorway. The traffic will flow through the two tunnel tubes (outer diameter of 11.3 m) on a total of four lanes. The two tunnel tubes are connected by four cross-passages which serve as escape routes in the event of fire. | |||||||
