| New - KAEFER wall-and-ceiling system for navy ships Navy ships of the new generation are platforms for high-tech-electronics. More and more, nautical and tactical procedures on board are becoming automated. On one hand this means a reduction in crew size, on the other hand, however, an increase in qualifications needed by those remaining. Quite noticeably, naval sailors are becoming specialists who must have the capacity to comprehend, operate and service extremely complicated instruments and sensors on board. Therefore, more stress is put on the naval crew, making periods of recreation necessary. It is hardly possible to regenerate in the customary crew quarters in the ‘privacy’ of a berth measuring 2 square meters or less, separated from the other crew members by no more than a curtain. To facilitate regeneration and thus assure that the crew performs well under very stressful working conditions, considerably higher demands are now being put on accommodations for the sailors. Taking this situation into account, KAEFER Isoliertechnik developed a wall-and-ceiling system for the new frigates of the German Navy Class F124 which on one hand meets such demands for regeneration, and on the other hand fully meets the special demands put on a system used specifically by the navy. While developing the system, KAEFER’s engineers were able to make use of their experience with German Navy projects SM 343 and MJ 332, for which a predecessor of KAEFER’s now existing wall-and-ceiling system was devised and installed. Based on such experience, it was possible to develop a system for Class F124 which fulfills all the specifications for an interior finishing system required on modern navy ships. On the new Class F124 frigates of the German Navy, the walls and ceilings in the cabins, operations headquarters, communication facilities, as well as in the galleys and the washrooms were lined with KAEFER’s new wall-and-ceiling system. The first sea trials were carried out successfully. The crew is very pleased with the increased level of comfort, as well as with improvements in parts of the ship where the system provides a noise reduction which implies the elimination of another source of stress on the job.
