| KAEFER’s Norwegian subsidiary has been awarded a contract for over 60 mil. € to help build an liquefied natural gas plant (LNG) in Hammerfest, Norway, the northernmost city in the world. For KAEFER Norway the year 2003 was a year of change. At the beginning of the year KAEFER’s industry and maritime divisions became independent companies — KAEFER Isolering AS and KAEFER Maritim AS. KAEFER is stepping up its efforts to meet the demands of the Norwegian market, first and foremost in the oil and offshore industries. There is an increasing demand for insulation, scaffolding and protective enameling from one source. In Norway, KAEFER is a market leader in this area, with an annual turnover of some 39 mil. € and approx. 400 employees. The first large contract in Norway has already been landed - an integrated services package for the construction of an LNG plant. KAEFER joined forces with Aker Stord and Aker Kvaerner Elektro to carry out a commission for the Statoil Group in Norway – the connection of the “Snøhvit” gas fields to a new LNG plant on Melkøya, a small island near Hammerfest. The order volume of the joint “Melkøya” project is approx. 200 mil. €; KAEFER’s order volume amounts to 60 mil. €. This is an interesting challenge for KAEFER, as the commission entails putting in a total of 770,000 man hours to carry out insulation, scaffolding and enameling work. It is the largest contract the Bremen-based KAEFER Group has ever been awarded in its 85-year history. In particular, KAEFER’s employees in Norway will be put to the test. In 1984 enormous amounts of gas were discovered in a gas field of the Barents Sea 140 km off the Norwegian coast. In the year 2006 the plant will begin to produce gas. The Snøvhit gas fields are to supply Spanish and U.S. markets with liquid gas. The plant is to produce approx. 6.7 bil. standard cubic meters of gas annually. It will be equipped with an integrated energy supply system as well as a biological clarification plant for water purification. The work on Melkøya is to begin in April 2004 and be completed in the course of 2005. Linde AG in Germany is in charge of the technical side and will assist Statoil in the construction of the LNG plant. The total investment amounts to approx. 4.5 bil. €. With over 6,000 employees and an expected turnover of 550 mil. € this business year, the Bremen-based, globally active KAEFER Group is on the rise. By the end of the year 2003, its turnover on the international market will for the first time exceed domestic sales, comprising over 50 % of the total turnover. | |||||||
